Draven's Work

Draven Steffen
Graphite, 2020
My project was a self-portrait in graphite. The picture I drew was a picture I took on the first day of school. I do not look too excited in the picture because it was after lockdown and online school. I really wanted to do online but I could not at the time.
I used a 2h pencil first. Then my next pencil was a 4b pencil was darker than the 2h one. Then my last pencil I used was a charcoal pencil which was my darkest. The 2h I used for the grid, my outlines, and my face. Then for 4b I used for most of the details and shading. The charcoal defined all the details. This project completes the assignment by using all the different types and courses of pencils and finishing all the details. One principle I used was contrast. I added a lot of detail to my eyes and I when I first look at it that is what my eyes look at first.

My name Is Draven Steffen, the name of my work is abandoned church, and the medium I used was pen and ink. I chose this photo because it looked really plain and I wanted to add to it.
I started off by drawing the building with a ruler and a pencil. Next I took the pen and went over the lines I drew with pencil. Then I added to it with detail and trees. The element I used was line. I used line on the building add added texture to it to look like wood. The principle I used was emphasis on the building. I made the thing that stood out the most.

Ocean Beauty 2022
Always Find the Sunshine Every Day

Ocean Beauty is created in the medium of colored pencil. The meaning behind this project is to make you feel happy and joyful. The flower on the sea turtles shell is a sunflower. Sunflowers always find the sunshine. They are also known as the happy flower because they bring joy to people. When you look at this project, I want you to feel happy and joyful because everything in it has a meaning behind it. The sea creatures in this project are my favorite sea creatures in the whole ocean. Especially the manta ray. Manta rays mean a lot to me because they symbolize freedom and quiet strength. They also represent maneuverability which means there will be many different paths in life that you will need to take, and you need to make your journey worthwhile.

Always Find the Sunshine in Everyday is created in the medium of charcoal. I chose this six-word memoir because was feeling overwhelmed and I found the good of the day. I chose to use this picture because I was having a bad day while sitting at work, it felt so gloomy inside but when the sun came out, I took a picture right by the window. Immediately my mood went up. The rest of the day until the sun went down, I found the sunshine, and that’s what made me happy.

Nemo is created in the medium digital. The personal meaning behind this project is when I go to the doctors, they have a fish tank that I always sit by in the waiting room. The fish I like to watch are clownfish. They are my favorite fish in the tank. My project is named Nemo after the clownfish in Finding Nemo.

Gentle Giant is created in medium acrylic. The personal meaning behind this project is don’t judge a book by its cover. Whale sharks are seen as scary because of their size and they are a part of the shark family. They are the complete opposite of that. They are completely harmless, and they are nicknamed as “Gentle Giants”. This goes the same way for people. People can be seen as mean, weird, ugly, etc. When in reality those people are the nicest and the best people to be around. Never judge a book by its cover.

Flow is in the medium acrylic. The personal meaning behind this project is the octopus is special because it is one of Mrs. Worden’s favorite things. Since it is my last year with her, I wanted to paint something that meant something to her.
The artist I chose is Brellian. The art piece that inspired me is Coastline by Brellian. Another piece that inspired me is a piece mRs. Worden has created. It has a beautiful blue octopus on is with jelly fish. I hope the people who view my art enjoy admiring it. I hope they think about the time and effort I have put into it. They should feel inspired by my pieces like they can try and create beautiful work. This piece compares to my previous work of this year by the theme. My theme of this year’s work is ocean animals. Each one has an ocean animal incorporated into it and sea life.
This piece fits into the personal meaning by having an octopus in it. The octopus represents one of Mrs. Worden’s favorite things. The artist that has influenced me is Mrs. Worden. She has been there to help me understand how to work with certain art styles and mediums.
My favorite things to paint are ocean animals. I grew up by the ocean always appreciating the wildlife. I still appreciate the ocean’s wildlife and the ocean itself. Certain techniques are important in this art piece. Like using dry brushes with little to no paint to add detailed shading to darker spots. Using a dark sketch underneath so when I paint over it, I am still able to see my lines, so I don’t have to sketch it all again. Using different sizes of brushes to get very fine details to make it look realistic.
My overall goal of creating art pieces is to look at them and say, “I created this”. I love to look at my work and think about all the time and effort I put into the piece to make it just how I want. When I first started taking art classes I wanted to give up because I though it would be too hard for me to do. The older and more experienced I have got, created art is like therapy to me now. It’s not something I don’t want to do or it feels like a chore. It is something I love doing and looking forward to doing at the end of the day. I use art to boost my mood and take my mind off of things.
The artist I chose is Brellian. Brellian’s name is Sarah but on her social media platforms she is known as Brellian. She started painting landscapes in early 2020. She loves the amount of peace that it brings into her life and into the lives of those around her. She quotes, “Painting allows me to connect deeply with the world around me and I have found that others connect with my paintings in such a unique and intriguing way”. She is an amazing artist and a wife and mother. She has worked with graphite, charcoal, clay, watercolor, pastel, wood carving and acrylic paint. She currently specializes in acrylic paint. She takes every chance she gets to experiment and create something new.

Jaws is painted in acrylic. Jaws my one of my favorite movies when I was growing up. It was a silly movie but at a young age you think it’s the best thing ever. Great white sharks have always been fascinating to me. I started out painting a sting ray and I didn’t like it so I thought back to when I was younger and how I have always loved great whites. I completely painted over the stingrays with white and started all over again.
The element color is used in the background. Color is an element of art made up of three properties: hue, value, and intensity. The element value is used in the shark’s colors. Value is the lightness or darkness of tones or colors. The principle variety is used in the shark’s fins. Variety is a principle of design concerned with diversity of contrast. Variety is achieved by using different shapes, sizes, and/or colors in a work of art. The principle graduation is used in the shark’s body. Graduation is a principle of design used to create the look and feeling of action and to guide the viewer’s eye throughout the work of art.
